Breakthrough Research Confirms Ice Continues To Be Cold Upon Direct Contact, Tactile Follow-Up Study Funded Through 2031

PASADENA, CA — A landmark study published Thursday in the Journal of Confirmatory Atmospheric and Celestial Investigations has delivered what the scientific community is calling 'a paradigm-sustaining result,' formally verifying that the sun rises in the eastern portion of the sky and that this phenomenon has been occurring, apparently without interruption, for a statistically significant stretch of recorded history.

The seventeen-year study, funded through a $340 million federal grant administered jointly by NASA, the National Science Foundation, and a regional subcommittee that has since been dissolved, employed a team of 214 researchers across eleven time zones who were tasked with observing the horizon each morning and logging what they saw.

'What we found was striking,' said Dr. Penelope Vacht, the study's principal investigator and a senior fellow at the Caltech Institute for Things We Were Pretty Sure About. 'Morning after morning, in location after location, the sun came up on the east side. We want to be careful not to overstate our findings, but the directionality was consistent in a way we did not anticipate at the outset.'

The research team initially hypothesized a more nuanced result. 'Our models allowed for a range of possible solar emergence vectors,' explained co-author Dr. Finn Brellis of MIT's Department of Observable Phenomena. 'We felt the responsible scientific position was to assume nothing. In retrospect, that may have been a touch conservative.'

Critics have questioned the study's scope and expenditure. Senator Dale Murchison of Ohio, a senior member of the Senate Subcommittee on Scientific Allocation, called the findings 'aggressively redundant,' a characterization Dr. Vacht rejected during a Thursday afternoon press briefing.

'Redundancy is the engine of confirmation,' Dr. Vacht said, pausing briefly to consult a laminated card. 'What we have produced is not common knowledge. What we have produced is documented, peer-reviewed, federally archived common knowledge. Those are meaningfully different categories.'

The study did produce at least one unexpected finding: on eleven discrete mornings between 2009 and 2016, researchers in Tucson, Arizona noted a brief visual ambiguity near the horizon that could not immediately be classified as definitively eastern. That anomaly, described in Appendix F as a 'directional soft zone,' has prompted a proposed $47 million follow-up study.

'We're not saying the sun wavered,' Dr. Brellis clarified. 'We're saying the east wavered slightly, in a local and non-binding way. The sun remained committed. That distinction matters.'

The National Weather Service has issued a formal acknowledgment of the study's conclusions and says it will incorporate the findings into its existing operational framework 'after a brief internal review period expected to conclude sometime before the sun rises again, presumably in the east.'

A companion study examining whether water remains wet during extended periods of non-observation is currently in its fourth year of funding and is expected to deliver preliminary results no earlier than 2028, pending peer review and a glossary.
