DEVELOPING: Tri-Federal Podium Stability Review Board Warns Citizens After Congressional Press Conference Microphone Stood In Place For Entire Duration Of Remarks It Was Directly Beneath, Structural Observers Confirm Podium Was 'Upright, Load-Bearing, And Not The Problem'

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Handshake Integrity Commission issued a sweeping Public Safety Alert late Thursday following the conclusion of a handshake between Senator Dale Compworth (R-IN) and Terre Haute resident Gary Felbick, 54, that multiple federal observers have now classified as 'fine, technically completed, and haunted by a silence that lasted approximately four seconds longer than protocol recommends.'

The handshake, which occurred at approximately 2:17 PM outside the Wabash Valley Community Grain Forum, was described by eyewitnesses as 'firm,' 'of normal duration,' and 'resolved,' before both men reportedly entered a mutual state of not knowing what to do with their faces. The pause, which lasted an estimated 3.8 seconds, has since been designated by the Commission as a 'Post-Grip Ambiguity Event' requiring immediate federal study.

'What we observed was a handshake that ended,' said Dr. Priscilla Tanth, Senior Liaison for Interpersonal Closure at the Commission's Bureau of Physical Greetings. 'The hands separated. The grip was released. And yet neither party pivoted away with the confidence the moment called for. We are alarmed, but we are also, frankly, not surprised.'

The alert, spanning 214 pages and three appendices, recommends that all citizens within visual range of a similarly ambiguous handshake 'maintain calm, avoid eye contact with the pausing parties, and do not attempt to fill the silence with a comment about the weather, as this has historically made things worse.'

Senator Compworth's office released a statement confirming that the Senator 'did shake the hand, does remember shaking the hand, and considers the matter resolved in a personal sense, though not in the federal sense, which is apparently a different thing.' Felbick, reached by phone, confirmed the handshake occurred and declined to comment on the pause, which he described as 'not a pause, just a moment,' before pausing.

Handshake historians are divided. 'The four-second post-grip window is what we in the field call the Sovereign Vulnerability Zone,' explained Morton Cleave, Professor Emeritus of Applied Civic Contact at the Midwest Institute for Greeting Studies. 'Both individuals have released physical commitment but have not yet established conversational jurisdiction. It is brief. It is almost always fine. And yet here we are, at the federal level, talking about it.'

The Commission has urged Congress to allocate emergency resources toward developing a National Post-Handshake Transition Framework, tentatively titled the 'Okay, Well' Protocol, which would provide citizens with an approved verbal phrase to deploy in the 3-to-5 second window following any handshake that concludes without a natural conversational successor.

As of press time, Senator Compworth and Gary Felbick have not spoken again. Officials confirm this is 'normal, expected, and not a federal matter, though we are monitoring it.'
