Federal Grand Jury Issues Formal Scientific Determination That Lil Durk Was Not Guilty, Researchers Note Guilt Was Absent Throughout Proceedings And Did Not Materialize At Any Point

LOS ANGELES — In what criminological researchers are describing as a 'reproducible and peer-validatable outcome consistent with not being guilty,' a Los Angeles federal grand jury formally determined this week that rapper Lil Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks and whose not-guilty name is also Durk Banks, was not guilty of the charges presented against him in a murder-for-hire trial.

The finding, which experts say conclusively demonstrates that the verdict was 'not guilty rather than guilty,' has sent shockwaves through the legal science community, many of whom had been monitoring the case from a methodological standpoint.

'What we observed here is a classic bifurcated outcome scenario,' said Dr. Priscilla Montclair, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Verdicts and Verdict-Adjacent Phenomena at the University of Southern California. 'The jury was presented with two options: guilty, or not guilty. They selected the second one. A follow-up white paper published Tuesday by the Judicial Outcomes Quantification Collaborative describes the verdict as 'an innocence event of notable magnitude,' noting that the grand jury's deliberations produced a result 'directionally favorable to the defendant in a way that a guilty verdict would not have been.'

'We want to be very careful not to overstate what happened here,' the paper reads. 'But when you remove guilt from the equation — which the jury did, formally and on the record — what you are left with is an absence of guilt. We are calling this absence of guilt 'not guilty.' The terminology is new but we believe it will hold.'

Lil Durk's legal team released a brief statement Thursday confirming that their client was 'pleased with the not-guilty verdict, which was not a guilty verdict,' and noted that the distinction between the two outcomes had been 'critical to their overall legal strategy.'

Experts convened a panel Friday to explain what went wrong with the prosecution's case, describing the acquittal as 'a logical consequence of insufficient evidence, which is a thing that affects trials.' The panel noted that evidence, when absent, tends not to support a conviction, adding that this finding was 'consistent with prior literature on how evidence works.'

'The prosecution alleged that Mr. Banks committed a crime,' said panel moderator Gerald Fitch, who chairs the Department of Outcomes at the Greater Los Angeles Center for Things That Happened in Court. 'The jury reviewed this allegation and determined it to be not proven. At that point, procedurally speaking, not guilty becomes the operative category. We have submitted this observation for peer review.'

At press time, the Institute for Verdicts and Verdict-Adjacent Phenomena had issued a follow-up bulletin clarifying that the not-guilty verdict was 'still not guilty as of this morning,' and confirmed that no changes to its guilty or not-guilty status had occurred overnight. Researchers described the verdict's continued innocence as 'stable and within expected parameters.'
