Local Officials Clarify Nothing: Authorities Confirm Arrest Was Made 'After The Crime And Not Before It,' Call Timeline 'Directionally Correct And Also The Only Legal Option'

JACKSON, MS — Officials from the Mississippi Investigative Sequence and Temporal Outcomes Division held a press conference Tuesday to formally confirm that the arrest of Jacques Ratliff in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, 29, did in fact occur after the incident in question, describing the chronological ordering as 'standard in structure, defensible in sequence, and unlikely to be reversed without significant implications for the concept of time itself.'

The press conference, which lasted forty-seven minutes and answered no questions, was convened after local officials determined that the public may have been unclear on whether the arrest preceded, followed, or coincided with the underlying event it was responding to.

'We want to be transparent,' said Deputy Director of Clarification Roland Finch, reading from a laminated card. 'The arrest came after. The death came before. These two things occurred in that order. We are not in a position to say more at this time, but we are in a position to say that.'

When pressed on why it took approximately one month between the discovery of Fortune's body behind an empty house and the arrest of a suspect, Finch referred reporters to a sixteen-page policy brief titled 'Gaps: What They Are and Why They Are Not Not Gaps,' which was distributed at the door and described internally as 'a living document in the sense that it continues to exist.'

Communications Director Pam Okafor confirmed afterward that the slides were 'intended to tell a story in a forward direction' and that the blank slide was 'doing a lot of work and we ask the public to respect that.'

The Tasia Fortune Incident Outcome Subcommittee has scheduled a follow-up briefing for next Thursday to address whether the arrest constitutes a development, whether developments are, as a category, things that develop, and whether the public should be made aware of this on an ongoing basis or only when relevant.
