WASHINGTON — A coalition of architects, kinesiologists, and what the grant application described as 'stair-adjacent professionals' has concluded a multi-year investigation into the fundamental nature of staircases, releasing findings Tuesday that confirm stairs are capable of facilitating both upward and downward movement depending on the orientation and intent of the user.
The report, titled 'Vertical Corridors: An Examination of Reciprocal Directional Capacity in Fixed-Riser Environments,' was submitted to the Department of Infrastructure Cognition at a cost of $4.2 million and runs 340 pages, including a seventeen-page glossary defining the word 'step.'
'What we found,' said Dr. Pamela Torchwick, the panel's lead researcher and a tenured professor of Applied Ascension Studies at the University of Central Delaware, 'is that the staircase does not privilege one direction over another. It is, in the most technical sense we could muster, agnostic.' Dr. Torchwick paused before adding, 'That was hard for some of us to accept.'
The study, which observed 4,400 stair-use events across fourteen American cities, found that approximately 51% of subjects used stairs to go up, while the remaining 49% used them to go down, with a margin of error that the report describes as 'stairs-shaped.' Not all experts are convinced the findings required formal documentation. Panel members pushed back sharply on such criticism. A minority dissent filed by two panel members argues that escalators complicate the report's central thesis and should have been included in the scope of inquiry. The dissent runs four pages and was, according to a footnote, 'received, reviewed, and placed in the appropriate folder.'
The Department of Infrastructure Cognition confirmed that a follow-up study on hallways — described in early planning documents as 'corridors of horizontal persistence' — has already received preliminary funding and is expected to begin accepting stair experts as lateral transfers.
