Team USA Hockey Players Accidentally Win Olympic Gold While Trying to Honor Dead Guys They've Never Met

PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA - In what officials are calling "the most accidentally successful sports moment in Olympic history," Team USA's men's hockey squad inadvertently won gold medals Sunday while attempting an overly complicated tribute to two deceased individuals they later admitted they had never actually met.

The confusion began when team captain Jake Morrison received a crumpled Post-it note from an assistant coach reading "honor Johnny + Matthew something" with what appeared to be ketchup stains obscuring the rest of the message.

"We figured it was probably important," explained Morrison, still wearing his gold medal backwards. "So we decided to play really, really hard as a tribute. Turns out we were playing against Canada the whole time, which was news to most of us."

Team members spent the entire game shouting "This one's for Johnny!" and "Matthew would have wanted this!" while genuinely believing they were participating in some sort of elaborate memorial ceremony rather than the Olympic finals.

"I thought it was weird that the memorial had so much body-checking," said defenseman Brad Thompson, who scored the winning goal while attempting what he believed was a "respectful salute." "But hey, different cultures grieve differently, right?"

The International Olympic Committee has confirmed that the gold medals are legitimate, despite the team's obvious confusion about literally everything that was happening.

"Honestly, this is the most focused we've ever seen the American team," noted Olympic observer Margaret Hendricks. "Nothing motivates athletes quite like honoring complete strangers."

When informed that Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau were actual hockey players, the team expressed mild interest before immediately forgetting and asking if there would be a buffet at the ceremony.
