Breaking: Local Officials Clarify Nothing Following Emergency Geographic Compliance Forum In Which The United Nations Subcommittee On National Positioning Confirms That Nations Which Share A Border Are Sharing It Simultaneously And From Their Respective Sides, Bilateral Cartographic Liaisons Warn Situation Has Been 'Ongoing Since The Border Was Drawn, Reciprocal By Definition, And Not Something Either Country Can Opt Out Of'

GENEVA â After seventy-two hours of closed-door deliberations, the United Nations Interagency Subcommittee on National Territorial Positioning and Adjacent Sovereign Unit Compliance issued a landmark 490-page report Friday formally establishing that two countries which share a border are sharing that border, and have been doing so for the duration of the border's existence.
The finding, which required the participation of forty-one credentialed cartographers, a team of seventeen Geographic Adjacency Verification Officers, and one consultant described in the report's appendix only as 'a man with a very large ruler,' concluded that the nations in question â referred to throughout the document as Country A and Country B in what summit organizers called 'a jurisdictional sensitivity measure' â are positioned next to each other on a continuous and mutual basis.
'What we can confirm, definitively and with the full authority of this subcommittee, is that the border exists between them and that both countries are on their respective sides of it,' said Dr. Flemming AaronsdĂłttir, Chair of the Subcommittee's Findings Dissemination and Re-Dissemination Working Group. 'Neither country is on the other country's side. That was a key finding. We felt it warranted its own paragraph, and then a second paragraph summarizing the first.'
The report, which was distributed to member states in both physical and digital formats â a decision that itself required a procedural vote â notes in Section 4, Subsection 11, Paragraph 3, that the border's location 'has not moved since the last time it was confirmed not to have moved,' and that any future movement would require a separate summit, pending availability of the man with the ruler.
Local officials from the host municipality of the summit, the city of Verthon-sur-Lac, held a press conference Saturday morning to address questions from residents about the summit's conclusions. Mayor Christiane Beaumont-Falque read a prepared statement for eleven minutes before confirming that the city had no jurisdiction over international borders and had primarily hosted the event because the catering contract had already been signed.
'We are aware that a finding was issued,' Mayor Beaumont-Falque said. 'We are not in a position to confirm or deny the finding. What we can confirm is that we are aware of it, and that our awareness of it does not constitute an endorsement of the geography it describes.'
When asked whether the city planned to take any action in response to the report, Deputy Communications Liaison Ădouard Trellis-Monceau said a follow-up press conference was being scheduled to address questions raised during the current press conference, and that residents seeking immediate answers were encouraged to consult the summary of the executive summary, which is available on the subcommittee's website pending translation into a language the website currently supports.
Geographic Adjacency Verification Officer Priya Sommerfeld, who spent fourteen months on the report's field research phase, described the confirmation process as 'rigorous, compass-dependent, and largely consistent with what any person standing at the border could have also determined, though without the appendices.'
The subcommittee has indicated that a follow-up report on whether the border is the same length on both sides is expected by late next fiscal year, funding permitting. The man with the ruler was unavailable for comment.
