Cruise Ship Passengers Thrilled To Bring Exotic Souvenir Hantavirus Home To Finish Quarantine In Own Bedrooms

BOCA RATON, FL — Calling it 'the most authentic travel experience of their lives,' several Americans who contracted exposure to a rare hantavirus strain aboard a luxury cruise ship were finally permitted this week to return home and finish their mandatory quarantine in the comfort of their own living rooms, where they can scare their neighbors instead of strangers.

'We paid for the Premium Platinum Experience package, and I have to say, a rare rodent-borne illness was not listed in the brochure,' said passenger Gerald Fitch, 67, who described the cruise as 'mostly lovely' except for the part where he became a vessel for a pathogen that hasn't been widely documented since the Eisenhower administration. 'On the bright side, I did get a lot of reading done.'

Cruise operator SunSplash Luxury Voyages issued a statement calling the incident an 'unforeseeable enhancement to the onboard wildlife experience,' noting that the infected rodent responsible had technically been a stowaway and therefore traveled without purchasing a ticket, which the company called 'frankly rude.'

Passengers were reportedly greeted at the airport by hazmat-suited family members holding hand-painted signs reading 'WELCOME HOME, PLEASE STAY IN THE GARAGE' and 'WE MISSED YOU (FROM A DISTANCE).'

The CDC confirmed that quarantined passengers are expected to make full recoveries, and reminded the public that hantavirus, while dramatic-sounding, is not airborne, a detail that has done absolutely nothing to stop Gerald's neighbor Linda from triple-bagging her mail.

'I brought back a hantavirus and a lovely macramé wall hanging from the gift shop,' Fitch added. 'Only one of those is currently biohazardous. I'll let you guess which.'

At press time, the cruise line had already announced its 2026 'Adventure & Immunity' package, with early-bird pricing available for select departures.
