Lakewood High Football Game Ends With One Team Having Fewer Points Than The Other Team, Loss Assessment Experts Describe Deficit As 'Real, Scoreboard-Confirmed, And Difficult For The Families In Attendance'

MILLHAVEN — Following what local sports commentator Dale Urchin described as 'a deeply confusing Friday,' a nine-member panel of regional athletic outcome specialists has formally confirmed that the Millhaven Mustangs defeated the Denton Falcons 34 to 17 in last week's varsity football game, a result experts say was primarily caused by the Mustangs having accumulated 34 points compared to the Falcons' 17 points, which is a smaller number.
The Tri-County Sports Outcome Verification Authority, which was convened Saturday morning following what officials called 'an unprecedented level of community uncertainty about what had just happened,' released its findings Tuesday in a 58-page report titled 'Game Outcomes: When One Number Is Bigger And What That Means For Everyone.'
'What we found,' said panel chair and certified athletic resolution specialist Dr. Bonnie Frecht, 'is that 34 is, in fact, more than 17. We ran the numbers several times. We brought in a second team to run them again. At no point did 17 become larger than 34, and we feel confident stating that publicly.'
The report further establishes that the Mustangs' winning margin of 17 points did not narrow or reverse itself after the final whistle, despite two separate community members reportedly waiting near the scoreboard for approximately 40 minutes to see if it would.
'We want to be very clear,' said Dr. Marcus Tollbee, the panel's lead scoreboard analyst, 'that once the clock reaches zero, the numbers on the board stop changing. That is by design. The game was over. The score was the score. We have no evidence that it became a different score at any point during the night or in the days since.'
Local sports anchor Pam Guilford, who has covered Millhaven athletics for WQRT Channel 4 for eleven years, broke the story with characteristic gravity during Thursday's broadcast, pausing at her desk for a full three seconds before stating, 'And tonight — experts confirm it: the Mustangs won. We have that confirmed. Confirmed tonight. For you.'
The Falcons' coaching staff, reached for comment outside the Denton athletic facility, said they had been aware of the loss since approximately 9:47 p.m. Friday when the game ended, but appreciated the panel's thoroughness.
'Coach Brisby knew,' said assistant coach Terrell Mounce. 'We all knew. The scoreboard was right there. It's a very large scoreboard.'
The Mustangs, now 6 and 2 on the season, are expected to play again next Friday, at which point the Outcome Verification Authority says it will be standing by to confirm the result of that game as well, pending score accumulation by both teams during the regulation period.
'We are committed,' Dr. Frecht said at a closing press conference held in the Millhaven Middle School gymnasium, 'to making sure this community always knows who won. It is a service we provide. We will keep providing it for as long as games continue to end with one team having more points than the other, which our projections suggest will be indefinitely.'
The full report is available at the Tri-County Athletic Authority office on Route 9, Tuesday through Thursday, between 10 a.m. and noon, excluding holidays and days when Frecht has 'a thing.'
