Local Astronaut Insists Space Didn't Give Him the Silent Treatment, Despite All Evidence to the Contrary

PITTSBURGH — Local astronaut Doug Wheelwright continues to deny that the vast, cold emptiness of space deliberately rendered him speechless during his recent stay at the International Space Station, despite mounting evidence that the universe was clearly giving him the silent treatment.

"It's a complete mystery," Wheelwright told reporters while nervously glancing upward. "One minute I'm floating around, making small talk with Houston about Tang recipes, and the next minute—nothing. But I'm sure space wasn't mad at me or anything."

Wheelwright, who became the subject of NASA's first medical evacuation of the year after suddenly losing his ability to speak, maintains that his condition had nothing to do with his previous comments about how space "looks kind of boring" and "smells like hot metal and sadness."

"Look, maybe I said some things about how Earth's atmosphere is way better than whatever space has going on up there," Wheelwright admitted. "And sure, maybe I called the moon 'overhyped' during a live broadcast. But that's no reason for the entire cosmos to get petty about it."

NASA officials remain baffled by Wheelwright's condition, though several mission specialists noted that his symptoms began approximately 30 minutes after he complained that zero gravity was "basically just falling with extra steps."

"We've never seen anything like it," said NASA flight surgeon Dr. Rebecca Martinez. "His vocal cords were physically fine, but every time he tried to speak, the words just... drifted away. Almost like space itself was refusing to carry the sound waves."
