Local Soccer Bench Achieves Sentience, Demands Credit for Player's Performance

SEATTLE - In an unprecedented development that has rocked the soccer world, the Seattle Sounders' substitutes bench achieved full consciousness during Sunday's season opener and is now demanding recognition for its role in midfielder Jordan Morris's game-winning performance.

The bench, which has served silently for three seasons, reportedly gained awareness at the exact moment Morris stood up to enter the game. "I felt this surge of purpose," the bench said through its newly-appointed spokesperson, a nearby Gatorade cooler. "For years, I've been absorbing the hopes and dreams of substitute players. It was only natural that I'd eventually develop my own consciousness."

Morris, who scored one goal and recorded one assist after coming off the bench, initially dismissed the bench's claims. However, he changed his tune after reviewing game footage that clearly shows him patting the bench affectionately before entering the match.

"I always knew that bench had good vibes," Morris admitted. "But I thought it was just really well-cushioned. I had no idea it was channeling centuries of soccer greatness directly into my glutes."

The bench, manufactured in 2019 by a small company in Portland (a fact it's deeply embarrassed about), claims it has been studying the game by observing thousands of hours of practice and matches. "I've seen every tactical formation, every emotional breakdown, every pre-game ritual involving lucky socks," the bench explained. "Morris's performance was simply the culmination of my extensive research into optimal substitute player preparation."

MLS officials are reportedly considering creating a new award category for "Most Valuable Furniture" following the bench's formal petition, which was written entirely in scuff marks and coffee stains.
